My research interests lie in economic sociology, the sociology of race and gender, and urban sociology. My research examines the social structures of predatory finance with particular attention to debt. Focusing specifically on consumer debt (credit card, student, medical, and rental debt), I explore the central role indebtedness plays in daily life, while also tracing the emergence of an extraordinarily profitable and multinational debt collection industry. My research aims to both examine and historicize debt as a tool of economic racism and redlining and seeks to understand the effects of indebtedness on Black and brown neighborhoods.
